Is it possible to get rid of the uncertainty in human life? Can we live humanly only with certainty? What does uncertainty mean in the Bible, and how did Plato deal with the terms for uncertainty? What does the etymology of the Greek term for uncertainty lead us to? These questions are asked in the text entitled To the Sources of Hope Despite the Uncertainty, in order to answer, among other things, the difference between the approach to the humanity of two thinkers on the threshold of the modern age, René Descartes and John Amos Comenius. The text points to uncertainty as an environment in which our lives are to prove to be human, in which we are to look for sources of hope but not to construct false or erroneous hopes.
