30 FOOD : teaser ': CD 1*^01-200*09 ^lllHlllllllllltllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll if you think the phrase "feel like a snack?" means someone is trying to be funny, you're wrong. They're only asking if you're hungry, or peckish or, if you're lucky, they're offering you something to eat or nibble on. Well, do you feel like a sandwich? FEEL LIKE A SNACK? SANDWICHES There are not many things easier to prepare than sandwiches. They are very typical in packed lunches, as party food or for picnics all over the world. And if you choose your favourite ingredients and pack your lunchbox with other goodies (such as crisps, a chocolate bar and an apple), you will have a light meal which will keep you going for the afternoon. Many sandwiches can be made extra tasty by adding some pickles in between the comic strip ............................... slices of bread. Choose either pickled gherkins, onions or other vegetables and cut them into pieces, or use chutney, which is a lovely mixture of pickled vegetables and fruits in a vinegar sauce, available as sweet, mild or spicy. Do you know how sandwiches originated? Lord Sandwich was a keen card player and to be able to eat and play, he ordered his servant to put all his meal in between bread slices. History doesn't say if Lord Sandwich won the game, but he became famous for this invention, back in 1733. Many Czech students face the problem of explaining what the Czech method of serving party "sandwiches" is. Well, the closest word to describe Czech bread spread with butter or margarine or salad and topped with cheese, eggs or salami is an open-face sandwich.
