Optional course: The Diary of Anne Frank: The Girl, the War, and the Book Teacher: Mgr. Zdenko Š Širka (sirka@jabok.cz) Summer Semester 2014/15, Tuesday 15:30-17:00 The Diary of Anne Frank: The Girl, the War, and the Book Annotation: We will read together selected passages from the diary written by Anne Frank and through them we will be accessing the inner world of the teenage author and the outer world of the war and persecution. The object of this module will be a close look at the result of the synergy between the context and the author, i.e. the book itself and will utilize a hermeneutical method. It means that the main question will be: What does ‘said’ says about what is ‘unsaid’? The goal of this reading seminar is to approach closer the process of writing as one expressing much more than is actually written. The goal is to explain the relation between the girl, war and the book. Requirements: B1 Level of English Evaluation: Each student will be required to read the book regularly, to discuss with the colleagues on the class, to be present on at least 75% of classes, to prepare one presentation (10-15 mins), to think, and to speak English.
