Osm mužů bylo obviněno z vraždy katolíka Kevina McDaida



Policie dnes  utvořila bariéru uvnitř soudní  síně, aby od sebe odloučila rodinu a přátele
katolického  muže ubitého k smrti a loajálních podpůrců mužů obviněných z jeho vraždy.


Šest lidí se objevilo v Ballymeně, Magistrátním soudu, Co Antrim, byli obviněni z vraždy Kevina
McDaida, 49, který byl zabit davem loajalistů.


Šest mužů a další dva byli také obviněni z pokusu o vraždu Damiena Fleminga, který byl kriticky
zraněn ve stejném útoku v Coleraine, County Londonderry, poslední neděli.


Muži, ve věku mezi 18-ti a 50-ti lety, vypovídali jeden po druhém a okresní soudce Philip Mateer
řekl, že všichni popřeli jakoukoli účast na vraždě a pokusu o vraždu.


Pan McDaid zemřel, když dav až 40-ti loajalistů vstoupil do katolické oblasti města, když se
Glasgow Rangers poprali s Celtics kvůli výhře ve Scottish Premiership.


Detektiv inspektor sdělil soudu, že předběžné post-mortem vyšetření ukázalo, že pan McDaid utrpěl
zranění  na nose, měl modřiny na zádech a že měl zvětšené srdce a zemřel v důsledku srdečního
infarktu.


Všichni obvinění byli zadržováni ve vazbě, aby znovu vypovídali  v Coleraine u Magistrátního soudu
prostřednictvím videokonference dne  8. června.


Více než 30 ozbrojených policistů označilo asi 70 loyalistů kteří naplnili lavice pro veřejnost
když se obvinění objevili. Více policistů stálo na druhé straně soudu kolem přátel a členů rodiny
pana McDaida, včetně jednoho z jeho čtyř synů.


30-ti minutové jednání proběhlo bez incidentu po varování okresní ho soudce, že kdokoliv bude rušit
líčení pokřikováním , bude vyveden a pokárán.


Craig David Cochrane, 18, byl obviněn za pokus o vraždu.  Jeho otec David James John Cochrane, 47,
byl obviněn za výtržnost.


Ivan Beattie McDowell, 42, byl obviněn za pokus o vraždu, John Thompson, 29, byl obviněn z vraždy,
pokus o vraždu a napadení; Frank Simpson Daly, 48, byl obviněn z vraždy, pokus o vraždu a napadení
Evelyn McDaidové, vdovy zavražděného a Leony Whittakerové.


Christopher McDowell, 33, byl obviněn z vraždy a pokus o vraždu, Aron Thomas Buk, 23, byl obviněn z
vraždy a pokus o vraždu, Paul Andrew Newman, 40, byl obviněn z vraždy a pokus o vraždu.


John McGrath, 50, byl obviněn z vraždy, pokus o vraždu a napadení Evelyn McDaidové.

Eight men charged over murder of Catholic man Kevin McDaid

Riot police formed a barrier inside a courtroom today separating family and friends of a Catholic
man beaten to death and loyalist supporters of the men charged with his murder.

Six men appeared in Ballymena Magistrates’ Court, Co Antrim, charged with the murder of Kevin
McDaid, 49, who was killed by a loyalist mob.

The six men and another two were also charged with the attempted murder of Damien Fleming who was
critically injured in the same attack in Coleraine, County Londonderry, last Sunday.

The men, aged between 18 and 50, appeared one after the other and district judge Philip Mateer was
told they all denied any involvement in the murder and attempted murder.

Mr McDaid died when a loyalist mob of up to 40 entered a Catholic area of the town after Glasgow
Rangers beat Celtic to win the Scottish Premiership.

A detective inspector told the court that a preliminary post-mortem examination showed that Mr
McDaid had suffered a broken nose and bruising to his back and that he had an enlarged heart and
died as a result of a heart attack.

All the accused were remanded in custody to reappear at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court by video link
on June 8.

Over 30 armed riot police ringed some 70 loyalists who filled the public benches as the men
appeared. More police stood on the other side of the court around friends and family members of Mr
McDaid, including one of his four sons.

The 30-minute hearing passed without incident after the district judge warned anyone shouting out
would be removed and dealt with.

David Craig Cochrane, 18, was charged with attempted murder. His father David James John Cochrane,
47, was charged with affray.

Ivan Beattie McDowell, 42, was charged with attempted murder; John Thompson, 29, was charged with
murder, attempted murder and assault; Frank Simpson Daly, 48, was charged with murder, attempted
murder and assaulting Evelyn McDaid, the dead man’s widow, and Leona Whittaker.

Christopher McDowell, 33, was charged with murder and attempted murder; Aaron Thomas Beech, 23 ,was
charged with murder and attempted murder; Paul Andrew Newman, 40, was charged with murder and
attempted murder.

John McGrath, 50, was charged with murder, attempted murder and assaulting Evelyn McDaid.
