We have not forgotten about the nurseries

"The doll called Papule (little big mouth in Czech) is my favorite of all toys here." says the four
year old Pasuna, whose hair is pitch black, while clutching a blond doll in her arms. About fifty
other three- to five-year-olds are sat around colorful round tables. We are in a brand new nursery
in the city of Trincomalee on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka.


The construction of the new nursery was finished at the end of December by People in Need, which is
building six and reconstructing two other nurseries in the region. All of the original nurseries
were swept by tsunami. "Immediately after our arrival to Sri Lanka, we started focusing on
education facilities just like most of the other organizations that came to help. Yet we realized
that nurseries got completely forgotten, so we started a reconstruction project right away in
February." says Honza Mrkvicka, the head of the mission. Apart from nurseries, People in Need has
repaired five schools, is in the process of extending four others and it is also building a new
school for 600 pupils. The first assistance to Sri Lanka had been financed from the (Club of)
Friends of People in Need funds. Thanks to the Friends' funds People in Need staff arrived to the
places that had been hit the worst right after the destructive wave subsided. The subsequent term
projects are then being funded from the public collection SOS Sri Lanka.


Fishermen in debt


Apart from Pasuna, 59 other children use the Jamalya nursery. The nursery belongs to the local
fishermen’s collective that originally built the nursery from their membership fees three years
ago. The tsunami damaged the school beyond repair. "We had been teaching the children under a palm
tree hut for over a year," Rifka, one of the local teachers, says "it used to be very hot and when
it rained, we could not teach at all."


Rifka and other teachers will soon take part in training about new teaching methods that People in
Need put together. "We do not want to merely build a building and hand over the keys, we would like
to contribute to improving of the teaching," the head of the mission, Jan Mrkvicka, explained. The
nursery works like before the tsunami. The teachers are not being paid by People in Need; it is the
parents who pay one and a half US dollars per child a month. "Most of the responsibility must be
that of the local people," Mrkvicka added. "Without your help, we would not have been able to build
a new nursery. The coop is still in debts after the tsunami." said the head of the cooperative
Haither Rizmy.

Neměli bychom zapomínat na jesle
Panenka, která se jmenuje Papule (česky trochu větší pusa)je tady mou
nejoblíbenější hračkou, říká čtyřletá Pasuna, jejíž vlasy jsou smolně černé,
zatímco svírá blonďatou panenku pažemi. Asi padesát dalších tří až
pětiletých je usazeno kolem barevných stolů. Jsme ve zbrusu nové školce-
jeslích ve městě Trincomalee na východním pobřeží Sri Lanky
Stavba nových jeslí byla dokončena na konci prosince (organizací) Lidé v
Nouzi, která buduje šest a rekonstruuje dvě další jesle v regionu.Všechny
původní školky byly smeteny tsunami. "Ihned po příjezdu do Srí Lanky jsme
začali prohlížet a zkoumat možnosti, jako většina jiných organizací, které
přišli pomoci. Přece jsme objevili, že na jesle se úplně zapomnělo. tak jsme
začali provádět projekt už v únoru." Říká Honza Mrkvička, hlava mise. Kromě
jeslí, Člověk v nouzi opravili pět škol, budou opravovat čtyři další a také
budovat novou školu pro 600 žáků. První zásah ve Srí Lance byl financován
klubem Fondu Člověka v nouzi. Díky jim přijeli pracovníci na místa, která
byla zasažena nejhůř, jakmile ničivá vlna opadla. Pozdější projekty byly
financovány z veřejných sbírek SOS Srí Lanky.


Zadlužení námořníci
Zvlášť od Pasuny, 59 jiných dětí užívá jesle Jamalya. Jesle patří místním
námořnickému kolektivu, kteří originálně postavili jesle díky jejich
členským příspěvkům před 3mi lety. Tsunami zničilo školu navzdory opravám.
"Učili jsme děti v chatrči z palmových listů více než rok. " Rifka, jeden z
místních učitelů, říká: "Když bývalo velmi horko, a když pršelo, nemohli
jsme učit vůbec."
